In chess, the pawn is the smallest, slowest, and least valued piece on the board. But if she journeys all the way to the other side — with courage, focus, and strategy — she is promoted.
She becomes a Queen.
This is not only one of the most remarkable rules in chess — it's also a powerful reminder that with perseverance and the right support, even the smallest and overlooked can rise to become the most powerful.
This is what Pawns to Queens is about: supporting young girls to move forward, one square at a time.
MEET OUR FOUNDERS
Chess Kidding was founded by sisters Seadimo and Tshepang Tlale — the first Black girls to represent South Africa internationally in chess.
For them, chess was always a family affair. Their mother taught Seadimo to play at age 3, and Seadimo passed it down to Tshepang when she was just 3 herself.
Today, with over 20 years of shared experience in competitive chess, coaching, and education, they’re sharing the magic of chess with the next generation — one move at a time.
